These are figures we created to enhance democracy rallies. One shows Lady Liberty holding a Donald in Chains figure. This is to remind us that the nightmares will pass and Trumpism will fade, sooner or later. Lady Liberty is 8 feet tall, made from painted, cut out styrofoam
The other figure is an animated face of Drumpf, where the words in his mouth change from LIES to HATRED to RACISM to VENOM, reflecting what emanates from him daily. His head is 4 feet across and he is about 6 feet tall.

ASSESSING THE SHORT AND LONG TERM DAMAGE THE TRUMP REGIME IS INFLICTING ON OUR COUNTRY
Trying to bring back manufacturing to the USA seems like a good idea. And stopping immigrants from flooding into the USA is a good idea. And trimming back the Federal government is a good idea.
However, pursuing all these goals in a mindless, haphazard way is clearly causing great damage to the USA and abroad.
Bringing in a cabinet of incompetent Trump worshippers, many from Fox News, is not a path to success.
So I decided to try to examine which Trump Tragedies are short-term and which will damage our future for generations to come. Here is my very incomplete assessment, in order of increasing long-term damage:
IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN:
Medium Term Damage?
In the short term the damage to hardworking families that pick our crops, work our slaughterhouses, and do the kinds of factory jobs that few others will hold down will be severe. Families will lose fathers, mothers, and children. Farms and factories will lose their workers. Some will go out of business. A new regime could come up with sound policies to allow these jobs to be filled, but it is not clear what the long-term damage will be.

VETERANS ADMINISTRATION:
Medium Term Damage?
In the short term, cutbacks to VA services, will hurt veterans who are suffering from physical and mental injuries from wars. There will certainly be an increase in death and suicides. It has hard to know what the long-term damage will be: will the Defense Department have a harder time getting recruits, given the lack of follow through by the VA?

TARIFFS:
Medium Term Damage?
Perhaps Trump’s tariff policies originated with the idea of bringing manufacturing back to the US, but it is clear that, in most cases, that won’t actually happen, so we are left with confusion. It would seem likely that the damage from the tariff wars would fade after some time, but it will take many years for trust in the US to come back.

NATIONAL PARKS:
Medium Term Damage?
Mindless cuts by Musk have certainly damaged our ability to run the national parks. Surely remaining staff will work their hardest to keep them running, but the inevitable loss of knowledge and motivation will take its toll. And local economies will suffer if visitor levels fall. Will the park’s ecosystems be permanently damaged by lack of proper staffing? We will find out.

CORRUPTION:
Damage uncertain
Using bit coins and other methods of corruption, Trump has put his regime up for sale. You can buy pardons for about one million. You can buy Federal policy changes for a bit more. Not clear if this damage fades away when he is gone, or if the damages paid for will haunt us for decades.

NOAA:
Long Term Damage?
There is good evidence that the mindless chainsaw cuts to NOAA did in fact lead to the pointless deaths in the Texas floods. But long term, hurting our ability to forecast hurricanes, tornados, and other weather events. When you fire highly trained people you damage institutional knowledge which can take decades to rebuild.

WAR ON IMMIGRANTS
Long Term Damage?
Short term Trump and his minions are causing pain and breaking up families. He is also damaging farms and businesses that can not function without these low-paid workers who can’t complain because of their legal status. But what will be the long term results of this? I suspect it is too soon to know, but arming and unleashing January 6th traitors among the ICE agents is certainly a dangerous direction for us.

THE PRESS
Long Term Damage?
By attacking nearly all news media and giving every special advantage to Fox News and other far-right media, Trump is damaging our free press, which has been a centerpiece of America’s freedom since Ben Franklin. Corporate control of media has been a growing problem, but Trump’s use of threats and fear has caused most TV networks and newspapers to bend knee to him. We are drifting to the old Russian system where there was only Pravda, which was just an outlet for propaganda from Moscow.

CLIMATE CHANGE:
Serious Long-Term Term Damage
The Trump hatred for wind and solar is now Federal policy as support is pulled back in favor of fossil fuels. States and some private firms will continue to pursue wind and solar when it makes financial sense, but the lack of Federal support is harmful. Meanwhile, our chief economic rival, China, is pushing harder and harder into solar, both covering vast areas with solar farms, battery storage systems, and also building very high quality electric cars that will leave the US in the past with our gas-powered fleet. And of course, the CO2 will continue to spew into the atmosphere and raise the temperatures, causing more big storms and forest fires. Sea levels will rise. China’s wisdom on the alone can not make up for a US government dominated by oil company demands. This may be the single biggest Trump Tragedy.

TAXES AND DEBT:
Serious Long Term Damage?
The national debt, now at $36.6 trillion, will go up by several trillion more, due to Trump tax cuts for the rich and corporations. At some point, this debt will need to be dealt with, and the consequences will be very painful. Right now the payments we make are greater than the cost of the Department of Defense. At one time, Republicans were the main opponents of federal debt, but since the billionaires have taken control of the GOP and Federal government, GOP types are going along for the ride. The next generations are headed for serious trouble.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
Serious Long Term Damage
This may turn out to be only second to climate change in terms of long term damage. The mindless cutbacks to basic science and research is halting scores of ongoing projects, stopping requests for new funding, convincing international researchers that the US is no longer the future of science. And this policy is handing the future of science to China, which a country that, for all its issues, understands that government funded science and technology is the key to future economic dominance.

USAID:
Serious Long-Term Term Damage
In the short term, it has been established that people have died from disease and hunger due to the chainsaw cuts to USAID. This is easy to document via Google search. But in the long term it is most likely that China will step in to take our place around the globe, trading support for rights to minerals and to build roads and bridges, and so on. So China will continue to build it’s world-wide influence, as the US pulls back. This will cut us off from various minerals that are critical, along with diminishing hwo the US is viewed.

ROLE MODEL FOR CHILDREN
Perhaps the Woest Long-Term Term Damage?
It may be, that in the long run, the greatest damage that Trump will have done is to give our children a discouraging role model: a man who is a rapist, a racist, a liar, a criminal, a bully, a cheat, a traitor. And a crude man who degrades public discourse by insulting his enemies with grade school name calling. How can a parent explain to a child that they should never do or say the things that Trump does and says? While Trump is President? Were I still a teen I would be a lot more negative than I was in 1967, watching the Vietnam War unfold with such things as civilian massacres by our troops. I would suggest that the utter widespread illegal, angry, childish actions of this President will damage children’s view of our country and of the future for decades to come.
